A gentle, step-by-step guide to dosing Gouldian Finches, Finches, and Canaries
Preparing to Handle a Sick Bird
Good hygiene protects you and your birds.
Before touching any ill bird, always wash your hands thoroughly. I also choose to wear disposable gloves and apply an alcohol-based antibacterial gel for added protection.

What You’ll Need
"Surgical or latex gloves"
1 cc syringe (many avian doses are as tiny as 0.015 cc)
A quiet, calm workspace

Step-by-Step: Administering Oral Medication
Step 1 — Isolate and Stabilize
Place the sick bird in a warm, lightly humid "hospital cage".
Allow "24 hours" before dosing so the bird can settle and regain some stability. You also can access the stool for any abnormalities.
Step 2 — Gently Secure the Bird
Remover the bird from its " hospital cage"
Hold the bird comfortably in your non-dominant hand.
Use your index and middle fingers to form a gentle but secure bracket to cradle the head.
Always keep the bird "upright" to prevent aspiration.

"Why Upright Position Matters"
Keeping the bird upright ensures the medication flows safely into the throat rather than toward the airway.
---
Step 3 — Align the Syringe
Position the syringe at the bird’s beak.
Some birds, like this cooperative Gouldian, may naturally tilt their head back, making access easier.

---
## Step 4 — Administer the Medication
Dispense the medication slowly, and gently.
Once finished, return the bird immediately to its enclosure to reduce stress.
# ❗If the Bird Won’t Open Its Beak
Apply the medication along the **side of the beak**.
The beak sides are soft and will naturally wick the liquid inward without forcing the mouth open.
Is Medicated Water Effective?
Short Answer; Not really
Why I Avoid Water Dosing
* Birds rarely drink their entire water supply daily.
* Dosage becomes inconsistent and unreliable.
* Healthy birds may be medicated unintentionally.
Because of these issues, medicating water is often a "hit-or-miss" method.
Better Alternative: Greens & Sprouted Seeds
If you cannot hand-dose, apply the medication to "greens or sprouted seeds.
Birds eagerly consume these foods, ensuring the "entire dose" is taken.
Use the same total volume of medication that would have been administered orally .
Final Thoughts
With a calm approach and the right technique, medicating your finch can be gentle, safe, and highly effective. Always follow your avian veterinarian’s instructions and never hesitate to ask questions.
