Cages

Ideal Cage Size and Accessories for Small Pet Birds

When housing small pet birds such as finches, canaries, or budgies, choosing the right cage is crucial for their health, comfort, and happiness. One important guideline to follow is providing at least 1.5 inches of personal space per bird, ensuring they have enough room to move freely without crowding.

For example, if you have 4 small birds, a minimum horizontal space of 6 inches (1.5" × 4) across the perching area is essential—though more space is always better. A good general starting point is:

  • Minimum cage size for 2–4 small birds:24" wide × 18" deep × 18" high

  • Minimum cage size for 5–6 small birds:30–36" wide × 18–24" deep × 18–24" high

Key Accessories to Include:

  • Natural wooden perches of varying thickness (avoids foot strain)

  • Food and water dishes (separate and easy to clean) Hoppers are the cleanest , Followed by tube feeders and finally bowls

  • any exposed metal /steel should be spray painted to prolong life of the cage and discourage rust.

  • Nest or sleeping hut (optional, depending on species)

  • Cage liners or trays (for easy cleaning)

Always prioritize width over height, as small birds need space to fly side to side, not just hop vertically.

Maintenance :

Maintaining good hygiene is essential to your bird's heath.

  • seed hoppers weekly or bi monthly ( unless dirty then clean as soon as possible )

  • water hoppers clean daily before each feed.

  • treat cups as often as necessary

  • nests usually after clutch is 10-12 days old. After initial clean replace with wood shavings or paper towel. Then every 2-3 days replacing bedding ( wood shavings . paper towel ) until they fledge. Once they fledge remove the nest, and clean thoroughly. If they are nest sleepers replace the nest after a thorough wash and compete drying, or replace with fresh clean nest.

Observe your bird daily and note any changes in behavior, stool, or appetite, as these can all be signs of illness.

PRO TIPS :

  • Keep a diary to note health, productivity, daily lessons learned. Things to fix, replace, discard. As well as hatch dates etc.

  • Have twice as many cage accessories as you need.

  • Stick to a Cleaning / Feeding schedule Routine lessens stress

  • Never leave "wet food" in the cage over night. It can spoil ad lead to illness.

  • Sweep daily  Seeds can entice vermin so keeping them from accessing it and setting up residence is a must for any breeder. Small vermin eventually entice much larger vermin.

  • Never leave a sick bird "until the morning" , isolate it, give it heat immediately upon discovery. Birds rarely show weakness or illness until it is at an unmanageable state. It may not make it "until morning" .
