To ensure a smooth transition and optimal health for your new birds, please review the following preparatory steps and procedures:

Essential Preparations Before Arrival

Please have the following items ready in a quiet, isolated room prior to your birds' arrival:

  • Electrolyte Supplement: Such as Pedialyte or an equivalent, which we will provide.

  • Quality Finch Seeds: As detailed on our Breeding Practices Page, for optimal nutrition.

  • Appropriately Equipped Cage: With a cover or backing on several sides to help reduce stress during acclimatization.

Arrival Procedure

  1. Set Up in Advance: Arrange the cage and food supplies before the birds arrive to minimize activity and disturbance, which can cause undue stress.

  2. Initial Care: Upon receiving your Gouldian or finch(s), administer the electrolyte supplement according to the instructions provided (included with your birds and accessible upon receipt).

  3. Acclimatization: Allow the birds to settle quietly for 2-4 hours before gently opening their travel box. Carefully introduce them to their new environment.

  4. Rest Period: Gouldian finches and other new arrivals require at least one week to recover from transport stress. During this time, minimize handling and avoid unnecessary disturbances to promote their well-being.

  5. Feeding Schedule: For the first four days, offer only the provided seeds and any supplemental items listed in the acclimatization manual. On the following day, and if all appears well, gradually introduce cooled, boiled water (prepared the night before).

Monitoring and Further Care

  • Observe their behaviour and health closely during this period.

  • If, after four days, your birds show no signs of recovery or health concerns, please consult an avian veterinarian immediately and contact us for guidance.

Health Certificate

We can provide a health certificate for an $80 fee, certifying the health status of your birds. We stand behind the health of our birds and trust that this certificate will provide you with confidence and peace of mind.

Quarantine Protocol

Quarantining is a vital step in preventing the transmission of diseases and parasites from new birds to your existing flock. We recommend a quarantine period of between 1 to 3 months; however, we typically quarantine for 45-60 days, depending on the birds' condition upon arrival.

During quarantine:

Maintain strict hygiene protocols, including wearing latex gloves and using alcohol-based soap between handling different cages.

Feed the quarantine birds after the main flock, ensuring minimal cross-contamination.

A comprehensive quarantine guide will be provided prior to your order.

Final Note:

We aim to assist you in not only acclimating your new Gouldian or finch(s) smoothly but also ensuring they remain healthy and happy for many years to come. Should you wish to learn more about quarantine procedures or preparing for your bird’s arrival, please do not hesitate to contact us.
