Lady Gouldian Finch Canada: D-Earth – Food-Grade Diatomaceous Earth for Aviary Pest and Parasite Control
Freshwater Diatomaceous Earth (D-Earth) is a naturally occurring fossil mineral powder made from microscopic freshwater diatoms. Widely utilized by aviculturists and breeders, Food Grade D-Earth helps support cleaner, drier aviary conditions while discouraging common pests such as red mites and dust mites often found in busy breeding environments. These pests can quickly damage feather quality, irritate nesting birds, weaken chicks, and negatively impact overall condition if left unmanaged.
Highly versatile and easy to integrate into aviary routines, D-Earth may be lightly applied beneath nesting material, beneath cage papers or substrates, or mixed into seed storage at up to 3% by weight as a natural physical pest deterrent. Many breeders also utilize it to help discourage rodents from stored seed, as its ultra-fine structure makes treated seed less attractive to pests without relying on harsh chemical treatments. Its naturally dry, ultra-fine texture helps support cleaner nesting areas, drier cage conditions, and healthier breeding environments throughout the annual cycle.
Common Uses:
- Beneath nesting material to discourage mites and moisture buildup
- Under cage papers and substrates to support cleaner cage conditions
- Mixed into seed storage (up to 3% max by weight) as a natural pest deterrent
- Supporting cleaner, drier aviary management practices
- Frequently utilized during breeding and chick-rearing periods
✍️ Important Safety Note When handling larger quantities (approximately 500 g or more), wear a quality dust mask and work in a well-ventilated area. Diatomaceous Earth is extremely light and may become airborne during handling, potentially irritating the nasal passages and lungs if inhaled excessively. Avoid breathing airborne dust directly during mixing or application.
